WORLDWIDE VOYAGE OVERVIEW

 

Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia, our Hawaiian voyaging canoes, are sailing across Earth’s oceans to join

and grow the global movement toward a more sustainable world. Hawaiʻi’s second astronaut in

space and our great teacher Lieutenant Colonel Lacy Veach once said, “The best place to think

about the fate of our planet is right here in the islands. If we can create a model for well-being here

in Hawaiʻi, we can make a contribution to the entire world.”

 

The Worldwide Voyage (WWV) is a 47,000-nautical mile, open-ocean journey around the globe to

support and sustain inspiring efforts to protect our earth for future generations. The Hawaiian name

for our voyage, Mālama Honua, means “to care for our earth.” Living on an island chain teaches us

that our natural world is a gift with limits, and that caring for this gift and each other can help us

survive urgent environmental and social challenges. The WWV will create globally connected

learners that work together to create positive solutions for Island Earth.

 

 

NĀ KELAMOKU

 

Whether our voyages are on the open ocean, or simply in the way we guide our own lives, us

youth will embody and promote the values and lessons of Mālama Honua long after the canoes

return home. Nā Kelamoku is a means by which we engage the next generation in

Hawaiʻi, in the Pacific, and around the world for years to come—exploring and sharing creative

solutions, developing global relationships, and discovering the wonders of this precious place we all

call home.

OUR OBJECTIVES

​

1. Train a new generation of crew members in the knowledge and skills of open-ocean

Polynesian voyaging and traditional wayfinding.

​

2. Empower a generation of youth community leaders to lead Hawaiʻi and Island Earth to a

more sustainable and vibrant future, in ways that bridge ancient wisdom and modern

technology.
